Day 192: Sexual Assault Expected

The fraternity closest to campus, Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE), has a rather disturbing nickname: Sexual Assault Expected. With that kind of nickname, you can’t deny that sexual assault is a problem on college campuses.

Before I go any further, let me add the disclaimer that I am not calling anyone out for being a rapist. I’m just trying to start some conversation.

Most of the fraternities and sororities have little nicknames, and usually they’re not that flattering. However, I think that this one really speaks to the problem of assault on campus.

Why is it that people joke about SAE? Is it really a problem there? And, if they have this nickname and someone is raped there, are the fraternity brothers not responsible because that’s just what you expect when you party there?  If people continue to joke around about rape and sexual assault, it only makes it that much more acceptable to be the perpetrator.

The first six weeks of classes are referred to as, “The Red Zone.” This is when all the recruiting for Greek Life happens. This is when the freshman attend their first Frat party. And, this is when sexual assault rates are significantly higher than at other times of the year. You hear a lot about fraternities not being safe, but that’s a huge part of campus life. Colleges and universities need to step up and help end this epidemic!
