Day 230: Basil

A few months ago (Day 158 of project365), I told you all that I was starting a garden. Well, my basil seeds epic-failed for some reason. So, a few Saturdays ago, I broke down and bought basil at the Saturday Market. As soon as I got home, it looked like it had died. Yes, the cut plant looked dead (or wilted anyway). As a last hope, I stuck the bunch in a jar of water in a windowsill. Somehow, basil (as a species) has forgiven me for whatever I did to offend it, and this basil started to grow roots! I’m so, so excited! This is how I’m growing plants from now on. It’s also just another reason to love Saturday Market.

Check it out:

It looks like a science experiment!

Basil is my favorite and I have a fool proof way of growing it from seeds. Dig up a small 1 foot area of garden space. Mix in good potting soil. Plant seeds one inch apart, water, cover with a plastic bucket to keep moist. When 3 leaves appear transplant and space 18 inches apart. This year I cheated too and bought two plants. But I didn’t need 100 basil plants this year. LOL
